The fall season. The weather gets chilly, the whole world seems orange, and you just want to cuddle in bed having your favorite treat. That’s apple crisp for you.

It might sound ridiculous that a simple combination of apples, cinnamon, and sugar could turn out this delicious, also with the help of some baking, but apple crisp is the ultimate comfort food for many, and when it comes to recipes for apple cobbler Pioneer Woman is simply the best. That’s not a surprise at all though, considering that we’ve been a big fan of their other recipes too.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and lightly grease a baking dish.
  1. Create a layer of apples evenly at the bottom of the dish.
  1. Combine flour, sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Mix well.
  1. Pour the mixture over the apples.
  1. Add the oats, baking soda, salt, and baking powder to another mixing bowl.
  1. Add the butter and stir well.
  1. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples, distributing evenly.
  1. Bake for 40-50 minutes. Remove when the topping is crispy and brown.

Substitutions

  • Oats — If we’ll be sticking to oats, old-fashioned, quick-cooked, and rolled would all work well. If not, quinoa flakes, with a high nutritional value and a somewhat similar texture, could be used.
  • Apples — The most important ingredient in the Pioneer Woman apple crisp recipe is the apples. The right apples can make the difference between a well-made apple crisp and one that is not. Granny Smith apples would probably be the best, with a firm and tart taste. Honeycrisp and Jonathan apples would be fine as well. Another option would be to mix different ones if you’re feeling bold.
  • Brown sugar — Our apple crisp recipe uses dark brown sugar, and there is a good reason for that. Dark brown sugar provides a deep, complex flavor that the lighter versions just cannot.

Variations

  • Nutty — The traditional Pioneer Woman apple crisp recipe is fine on its own, but it could be better with adding allspice, ginger, or nutmeg.
  • Fruity — Apples are a must. That’s for sure. But you don’t have to hold back on other fruits. Peaches, pears, or any other fruit depending on the season would all provide a different flavor to your favorite fall-time dessert.
  • Creamy — We’ve already mentioned that this apple crisp recipe is gorgeous on its own, but then again, a basic, simple vanilla ice cream would suit you well.

Equipment

  • Measuring cups and spoons.
  • 2 mixing bowls.
  • 9x13 baking dish.

Storage and reheating

  • Transfer any leftover apple crisp to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Freezing the leftovers could increase the shelf life to three months.
  • You can reheat using an oven, at 350 degrees for ten minutes.

Tip

  • Use butter — For some extra flavor, use butter when greasing your baking pan instead of cooking spray.
